Watchin them birds on the street

My first falcon sighting. To chance upon a Shikra, in the middle of urban Delhi, is surprising. Thanks to the drifter day, I got to notice it, perched on the branches of the tree next to my balcony, feeding on carrion. A long observation ensued. The bird was not nervy to my presence, as I had assumed. We both checked each other out aplenty. A very curious squirrel kept pestering the bird, while it lounged on its breaks between the feeding cycles.

PS: Shikra derives from the word "shikari" or hunter, as it is trained and used in hunting by the falconers. It is comparable to a German Shepherd (of domesticated birds world), as in being a utility bird that could fetch game for other more prized birds.

It also turns out that Shikra is not a falcon, but a type of hawk (also called "little banded goshawk") - an Accipiter. It probably was a female, "her" spots match more of whatever females I could find on Google for a confirmation.

The shikra is a small raptor (26–30 cm long) and like most other Accipiter hawks, this species has short rounded wings and a narrow and somewhat long tail. Adults are whitish on the underside with fine rufous bars while the upperparts are grey. The lower belly is less barred and the thighs are whitish. Males have a red iris while the females have a less red (yellowish orange) iris and brownish upperparts apart from heavier barring on the underparts. The females are slightly larger.

Armchair ornithology FtW. This is why we need surviving canopies in our residential areas.

Puppy Crush

Last evening, came home from a run, to shrink in horror of seeing Pup-2 lying lifeless, jaw open in the agony of his last moments. He was a month old, at best. It was only in the last week that we had noticed this litter of 6 flopping all over our neighborhood; since then I'd been a regular benefactor towards their nutrition.

I love dogs, unconditionally, and seeing one whom I'd assumed guardianship turn road meat, was very sad. I was also the one to carry his still-warm body to the garbage dump. [Coincidentally, 2 days back, I had dreamed of disposing a dead dog]

Being 99% sure that it the deed of some local car owner, who carelessly backed out from the parking without any thought of having a tiny life at the mercy of its wheels, nobody could be blamed for this. But this afternoon, I acted 'proactively', and plastered these around the neighbourhood:

My one bit.

The Wrong Side of Guwahati?

Note: if the above image catches your interest, you are a rapist.

Guwahati is in recent news for the public molestation and assault on a teenage girl outside a pub, as impotent onlookers swarm in just for a peek. Though disturbing and condemnation-worthy, it gives us reasons to celebrate. What it does is send positive signs that Guwahati is a blossoming city (or a concept of city as we know it) - now to be counted among the league of Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Bangalore, all of whom have been proud to have their own string of rapes and molestations to claim. This is how the peripheral states merge with the mainstream. I can imagine the expression on many people who were always hesitant move to such a place, but who now feel relieved that they can find men of equal degeneracy, and mobs to dissolve their personal responsibility and revel in uninhibited impromptu exploration into the human anatomy. Same goes for the women who don't wish to change "the game" that they're so well versed in merely due to a change of cities. We revel in being malicious and delight in mocking our midgets - including our midgets themselves (except for that one midget). Who ever had a problem to that?

The one in the problem zone right now, is Mr. Amar Jyoti Kalita (aka "the man in the red t-shirt"). He is on the run, and purportedly presently hiding in Bhubaneshwar (Odisha). What's the best thing about the developing story is, that this guy is on Facebook. And the profile is public, which opens a Pandora's Box into his personal life.

His picture updates tells that he admires the Indian Army (in the meantime, an Army jawan in Assam is jailed for molestation, how coincidental is that), likes Pierce Brosnan (which is why he calls himself "bond"), and is quite a roadie driving around his Maruti Swift to envious locales. He uploads his childhood, and school photographs. His favorite food is Maggi ("Home made", as he's specified). He even likes Iñárritu's Babel - spelled Bable (sic) on his profile. He shares a lot of witty humour doing rounds on Facebook (example - Gandhi: "Alcohol is not the answer to all questions" Vijay Mallaya: "Alcohol is not the answer to all questions, but if you don't get the answers it helps you forget the questions"). He drinks VAT 69, classy.
Ironically, one of his status updates (from Nov, 2011) reads "Enjoy life and all the things you have at the moment because you can't have everything at once"... seems he was living his life on a hunch.

He's so much like everyone else. And now he's being hounded by everyone else. He's been labeled a "rapist" (which he technically isn't). There's even a group called "Amar Jyoti Kalita Ko Phaansi Do" (hang AJK) with 1013 likes [Note: the URL of the page says "Kill AJK", not hang, which in itself hints at an irrational mindset of this activist crowd].
Each of his recent Facebook updates have received scores of shares, by people demanding his head - especially ones in which he's wearing that same red t-shirt and with that same dirty smirk, but curiously not the ones where he's with his music band (he claims he's a vocalist), or where he's just a regular guy at some family function. He's also made the great mistake of uploading his passport scan, which has already got a mob resharing it on their pages - I wonder if those passport details are abused. In summary, his profile, though it conveys a superficial calm, has been decimated.

Talk about passive activism - come see this.

Let me state that I don't sympathize with Mr. Kalita here. I'm scared - he's just as normal as everybody else, and that is the scary part. Having gone through his past year's posts on Facebook in a rush, I can only perceive him as being condemned to death for 40 minutes of deviation from the accepted normalcy (which, too, seems like under intoxication). How far are we from that? Its all credit to our mob mentality, which has even brought out the basest of behaviour among the holy men.
There's no simple solution. What are we gonna make the charge against - alcohol? bars? girls in bars? girls? men? engineering graduates? mustaches? gatherings?

To end on a lighter note, the last thing he wants is to be tracked through 4-square ("Amar Jyoti Kalita is now the Mayor of Hotel Pal Heights, Bhubaneshwar" or some update like that), or perhaps through an update like this one

Warring for the Women

#1: Delhi seems safe (for women).
MIGHT BE BECAUSE
#2: I do not move about. AND
#3: When I do, its usually the safer locales; that is what the undeniable safety of the Delhi Metro does to you - now everything HAS to be within 20 minutes of reach.

OTHERWISE
#4: I'd have come across the common scenes of direct/indirect abuse of the women. AND
#5: I'd have had the chance to headbutt into some random repressed fucker(s) doing so. HM
#6: The last I felt like that was some morning of January, 2008, upon learning of the terrorists attacking some couple on the New Year's eve close to a 5-star hotel in Delhi.

This über campaign, and the amazing artwork that an associated art group created set me off to the fancy of physically assaulting those sad people.

Do I see a woman getting back even more strongly...the dainty slap taking shape of a punch? Yes.
Doing I see her knocking down those bikes/bikers that block her way and ask her to step out? Yes.
Do I see those bikers finding a new respect? No.
Do I see bystander stepping into the role of Heroes/Heroines? Maybe.
I just hope that such counter-reaction isn't met by counter-counter-reaction.
That rubbish party has already become a national face, henceforth holds more clout, and must be cashing in on more funds. The facade of culture is a great scheme for a business model.

My itch that is, is that there have been much severe incidents in the past (being sprayed with acid, burnt, abused, raped, killed), but the collective conscience only wakes up when it almost became a personal thing to the people who know how to make websites and write artikels. The sudden flood of sympathy seems confusing, and the keyword 'sympathy' only reminds me of an Amartya Sen quote:
"It can be argued that behaviour based on sympathy is egoistic, for oneself is pleased at others' pleasure and pained at others' pain, and the pursuit of one's own utility may thus be helped by sympathetic action."

Now let's see: the victims were accessible enough, not deprived of the power to speak (physical restrictions that being sprayed with acid or being killed puts) and, most importantly, willing to speak (thank God for being progressive-minded!). So this has shades of ego-exercise about it. And no, I don't think such activism fueled by ego is wrong, but surely something that had been existing latently and would've been much better off had it come earlier.

Seeing it another way, this incident caught on as it involved large congregations over a large number of places and, more importantly, was reducible to a simple binary relationship - the abuser and the abused. What the latter means gets more clear if one recalls the twisted social nature (thanks to our nakedness to irrational arguments) that dowry deaths or family abuse assume in India, and only a few NGOs are left to fight over it for years at times. 'I personally believe' that we learn to have an immediate opinion in these smaller cases as well - without needing the necessary media to generate sympathy to decide of taking action.

If anybody truly feels humiliated at such an incident, then they will not be looking for such straightforward binary roles: because there aren't any. These people that did so are inflated balls of ego, and deflated icons of potency. They promulgate their ideologies in private circles, which often escapes notice right under our eyes; they live amongst us, and you see them doing small, irritating, cute, (assumedly) social things everyday to push in their ideology. We should work on showing them humans first rather than creatures from hell, and then work on a direction that shows their decline to that creature from hell.

rightnow: so happy at the thought of going Gail Wynand (junior years) at the goons for something I obsessively feel about. Such thoughts should not be restricted to 2AM in the morning.
As always, late by a month in reactions :(
